Digital marketing is dominating the industry, but with its rapid growth, it’s easy to make mistakes in your marketing strategy. Here are the five most common digital advertising mistakes, and how you can alter your strategy to make things work in your favor!
Not Knowing the Target Audience
In the digital world, knowing who your target audience is and what they like is the best way to reach them. Targeted ads allow you to narrow down your ideal client based on location, demographics, interest, and online behavior, and directly display your ads to them. If your targeted ads aren’t as successful as you thought they would be, take some time to engage with and learn about your audience. The more time you spend with them, the easier it will be to narrow your focus for each campaign.
Using Social Media Wrong
There are two ways you could be using social media wrong. The first is that you might be using the wrong social media platform, and the majority of your audience isn’t on there. If your company is all about aesthetics, your audience is most likely on Instagram. If your target audience is professional and about sharing resources, you might want to be using LinkedIn. Research each platform and learn about what the majority demographics are. This way you can figure out where your target audience most likely is.
The second way you could be using social media wrong is not understanding the platform you are using. Each social media platform has something about it that makes it unique from one another, and etiquette that users abide by when using the platform. For example, users on Instagram can use up to 30 hashtags on a post, and many of them do. However, on Facebook, users don’t typically use any hashtags even though the platform allows it. The best way to know what each platform etiquette is like is to dive right into the platform and see how others are posting and interacting on it.
Not Understanding The Data
Understanding the analytics of your digital marketing campaign is crucial for your growth. The data is the key to know what aspects of your marketing strategy is working, and what could use improvement. Many social media platforms with business profiles allow the admins to see the analytics of how well the page and posts are doing. Take advantage of this resource and learn what the data means. The analytics will tell you what strategies are working and what aren’t, so you’ll be able too to capitalize on what is working and alter what isn’t!
Rushing for Results
Many business owners expect to see digital marketing results immediately, but like most good things in life, results from marketing strategies will take time. Yes, the digital world moves fast, but it takes time for people to trust and engage with your business. The key is to be consistent and diligent with your campaign. Posting on social media every day, setting up campaign ads, and engaging with other users can still take a month or two before seeing substantial growth, and that’s considered a fast ROI (Return On Investment). As for SEO (Search Engine Optimization), if done with the right strategy, it could still take 4-6 months for substantial results to show. Just be patient and be consistent.
Being Goalless
Having goals is vital to growing your business. Without the proper goals set, your company may end up going in circles. Brainstorm how you want to see your business grow and practical things you can do to get there. Goals should be reassessed occasionally to maximize growth, whether that maybe every three months, six months, or yearly! It depends on the progress your company has made towards reaching your goals and is ultimately up to you and your team to decide when is best to reassess.
